Exhibition Dates and Location

Breanne Wish's solo exhibition The Colour of Then, is on display October 10th - January 7th 2026, in the Timms Walkway Gallery at the Timms Community Center (20399 Douglas Crescent, Langley BC V3A 4B3). The Timms Community Centre is open from Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM, Saturday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Exhibition Statement

The Colour of Then displays an array of acrylic paintings ranging from 22 x 28” to 60 x 40”, displayed on canvas or other fabrics. I tend to stay within the bounds of the CMY palette, as vibrancy and heavily saturated images have always defined my practice. In addition, I paint in a consistent stylized brushstroke that I would consider to be impressionistic realism. Also evident in this exhibition is my interest in portraiture; I have always found that painting human expression conveys emotion and meaning with a depth that other imagery may fall short of achieving. I feel as though it gives way to a deeper connection between the subject and the viewer. I have also always been fascinated by the complexities of painting the human body and faces, and by how an understanding of shape and colour can be built to be recognizably human.

This exhibition is not only strung together visually, but thematically as well. When I first started building this collection, I recognized that what I was creating was deeply rooted in my passion for people, memories and experiences. Each piece was a reflection of something or someone I was deeply connected to. Recently, I have asked myself - why do I choose to create things that make me feel nostalgic? Why do I thrive when I am immersed in this thought or haze of an experience that already took place? The answer is uncertainty. This was a tough discovery though, as I had to face the reality that it comes from this constant, hidden discomfort of not knowing what the future holds for me. Painting nostalgia, for me, is a way of seeking comfort and perhaps an authentic experience at a time when I feel overwhelmed by my own destiny. My own personal choices, such as relating to my career,

family and finances, in combination with political, environmental, and technological change are all variables that may lead to an increasingly precarious future. Memories are experiences that are familiar, certain, and resolved. They already happened. I can look at these memories through a rose tinted lens because no matter what the memory entailed, good or bad, it happened, and I came out the other side. I hope that this collection offers the viewer the same sense of solace as I felt when I created it. I aim to create space for viewers to reflect, reconnect and allow for a brief but meaningful pause from the weight of uncertainty.
